Ankle boots made famous by Queen Victoria and Beatles

Ankle boots, alias Chelsea boots have, like other types of shoes, a long and specific history. The first appearance of ankle boots dates back to the Victorian period when the official name "Jodhpur" was used. However, we still know their name today as rather "Chelsea" boots which simply mean ankle boots. A significant moment for ankle boots was represented by actual discovery of vulcanised rubber in 1839 by Charles Goodyear in Springfield, Massachusetts. This subsequently opened the gates of success to Queen Victoria's shoemaker, J. Sparkes- Hall who was the first to design real ankle boots in 1851. To ensure uniqueness of his idea he had the design of elastic ankle boots patented. On this occasion he stated that it was the Queen Victoria who walked in them daily and thus gave the strongest proof of the value she attached to the invention.

The ankle boots looked simply, and their big advantage was that the foot could slip in and out of the shoe quite easily, so taking these elastic ankle boots off required no effort. To stay with the simplicity of the ankle boots, originally it was a universal shoe for both sexes, men and women. Horseback riding represented the very first mission of ankle boots. But thanks to rapidly growing interest they became a fashion trend without a doubt. This was mainly in the period from 1851 to 1914. Then, as it happens in fashion, there was another trend temporarily on the scene.

Another style of Chelsea or ankle boot emerged around the early 1960s in the British Isles.  As you can probably guess, the famed British rock band, the Beatles, was an inspiration for this shoe. John Lennon and Paul McCartney gave rise to further development of ankle boots in cooperation with Anello & Davide company. The shoes had a cut-slim design with a pointed toe, with the added detail of a Cuban-style heel to make them even more attractive. Ankle boots thus became a stylish footwear, the shoe of choice for many artists and musicians like The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Pete Doherty. These boots have obviously become a great challenge for many fashion designers to make any action woman happy with their unique pieces worn in cold days.
