Audrey, Bridget and Marilyn–ballerinas for a muse

Once upon a time in the 1950s Rose Repetto, Italian-born business woman lived in France. She had one son – a dancer. Thanks to him the history of ballerinas or ballet flats, popular dance shoes began. The son asked his mother to sew him comfortable dance shoes in which he could dace easily. So Repetto ballerinas were born. The brand, however, did not last long. When Mrs Repetto died ballerinas died together with her.

Ballerinas re-birth and a great opportunity came again thanks to a very popular shoemaker of those times - Salvatore Ferragamo. It should be noted that it was not the first and only Salvatore trying to impress with ballerinas. At the end of the 19th century Salvatore Capezia, New York designer took his change to make a breakthrough, however, with no success. Let´s get back to Salvatore Ferragamo, the saviour of women´s ballerinas:

In 1954 Audrey Hepburn, the Hollywood star addressed him with exact criteria of her dream shoes. She was a tall woman who wished to become a ballet dancer in her childhood so she preferred low flat and comfortable shoes.  And there they were, ballerinas from the famous Ferragamo designer. They started their carrier in „My fair lady“ movie like real stars. Ballerinas  experienced their significant step forward when they were presented at the Vogue fashion magazine top page. Even other Hollywood actresses like Brigitte Bardot, Marilyn Monroe were smitten by this ballerina wave. Ballerinas experienced their great boom and became a top fashion trend very popular also among common women. We have to admit, though, that fashion designers, the masters in the fashion art gave ballerinas the right sparkle and glamour as well as colourful designs.

Practical, elegant and much more

The word ballerina comes from the Italian word ballerina meaning ballet dancer. It is a standard low flat shoe which hides behind the elegance of a prima ballerina.   Ballerinas specific features can´t be overlooked even though we are not any shoe experts: Typical flat shoes fully closed and widely cut so as to nicely decorate our feet.
